The theory of plate tectonics is a theory that the plates of the earth that make up the earths crust move and interact. The movement is thought to trigger or cause the earth's seismic and volcanic activity. It is also thought to contribute to continental drift and mountain building. The theory states that the earths crust (lithosphere) is broken up into 7 large plates and 18 smaller ones that all move past and interact with each other.
