The Rock Cycle
The Rock Cycle is a model showing how one of the three rock forms (igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic) are created and/or changed into another. The rocks are changed by the processes of
-cooling
-melting
-heat and pressure
-weathering and erosion
-compaction and cementation
Magma and sediment are also part of the rock cycle because they can be changed into rock by one of the processes listed above.
A basic rock cycle would be: magma cools outside the earths crust and becomes extrusive igneous rock in a process called crystallization, (if the lava cools quickly gasses bubble in the lava causing the rock to have many different holes) -> then weathering and erosion break the rock down into sediment (and other forces carry the sediment to a place like a river bed, ocean, lake ect.) -> next the layers of sediment build over time compaction and cementation turn the sediment into sedimentary rock in a process called lification -> then the sedimentary rock is pushed deep under the earths crust by gelogic forces -> then heat and preassure cause it to become metamorphic rock -> if the now metamorphic rock gets pushed down deeper under the earths crust it can become magma -> then the process starts all over again.
Remember this is not the only rock cycle there are many more as shown in the image above.
